More than sixty years from the date of its creation, the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA), coordinated since 1989 by the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, is still the major federal body in charge of promoting arts, artistic education and research, as well as preserving and maintaining the 20th and 21st century real estate and property wealth, which responsibilities have originated different programs and actions with the participation of the artistic community and civil society.
In the area of artistic promotion, INBA’s goals are to provide a balanced, varied supply, one which retrieves the tradition but which also fosters the avant-garde; constantly linked to the artistic community; stimulating art production by strengthening contests, biennials, and awards, as well as acknowledging the trajectory of creators and groups; locating new talents and generating artistic frameworks to empower their development; contributing to position artists and offering alternative locations for them to show their work.
To fulfill this mission, the Institute has a broad cultural infrastructure, where the Palacio de Bellas Artes is the major stage for arts in Mexico, as well as several work centers and artistic groups, such as the national companies of Dance and Theater, the Ópera de Bellas Artes, the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, the Orquesta de Cámara de Bellas Artes, the Coro de Madrigalistas, the Concertistas de Bellas Artes, and Solistas Ensamble.
